Thermal Techniques

Thermal enhancement can increase remedial effectiveness for difficult organic contaminants.

Thermal remediation and thermally enhanced remediation methods remove organic contaminants from soils using either direct soil heating, or a variety of heat supplemented extraction techniques.

Thermal techniques can be used to treat contaminated soil in situ or ex situ, either on site, or at one of our soil treatment centres.

Available techniques include electrical resistive heating, steam extraction and thermally enhanced vapour extraction.

Contaminants that can be treated using in situ thermal treatments include:

  • chlorinated solvents
  • dioxins and dibenzofurans
  • pesticides and herbicides
  • petroleum and petroleum products
  • semi-volatile hydrocarbons
  • polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons including creosote and coal tar
  • polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
  • mercury
